Canadian Job Vacancies Reached 435,000 in First Three Months of 2019

According to the current update by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business(CFIB), the rate of vacancy in the private sector in Canada hit another record of having the highest number of vacancies in Quebec in the first quarter of 2019. It was reported by the federation that in the first four months of 2019, there were about 435,000 vacant jobs in Canada and this amounted to 3.3% job vacancy rate.

The vice president and chief economist of the CFIB Mr. Ted Mallet reported that for the past two years, the rate of vacancy in the nation has been on a steady increase and in the last quarter, a breaking record was hit.

According to the CFIB, unskilled or semi-skilled occupations are less affected by the Labour shortages than skilled occupations.

Though shortages of Labour is still a challenge for employers mainly in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, the rate of job vacancy is relatively slow when compared to the same time last year.

Labour shortages by Province

The most acute Labour shortages in the first quarter of the year was in Quebec, with 4.1% vacancy rate.

British Columbia, Ontario and New Brunswick follow closely with 3.6%,3.3%, and 2.8% vacancy rate respectively. However, Prince Edward Island is the least affected province with 1.8% vacancy rate.

Shortages by Sector

The construction industry in Canada faced a 4.9% vacancy rate in the first three months of the year, and was closely followed by a 4.7% vacancy rate in personal services.

There was a 3.8% and 3.7% vacancy rates in the businesses in agriculture and hospitality sector respectively.

This high rate of job vacancies in Canada shows the number of job creations.

In April, 106,500 jobs were added while 27,700 more jobs were created in May, bringing the unemployment rate in the country to its lowest point.

From the figures available in 2018, it is noted that recent immigrants aged 25 to 54 are the beneficiaries of this situation with a 71% employment rate noticed in the country since 2006.
